It all started in the Study of the Science of yoga. That was a total game changer for me. I had been rock climbing for about 10yrs. Ambitious but very very average ability. Always looking for an edge, a way to improve my frustrating mediocrity. Stalled out at 5.9.
Can’t remember exactly where I read about it, might have been an advertisement in Yoga journal for Ashtanga yoga.? So I took a class and discovered something I had no idea existed. A training regimen so utterly complete that it yielded more stamina, strength, balance, and flexibility than I had ever experienced in a 2 hr workout before. Not to mention the bliss of unparalleled well being.. when finished. Oh yes indeed I found the mother load! I was hooked. Hungry for all I could get. Balancing 3 to 5 classes a week while working full time and taking care of my 4 children solo. Some days were Pretty crazy at times but it all worked. Today I have an Assistant DA daughter, a lab technician CLS daughter, an HVAC son, and a sales executive for a high rise builder.
I studied under various teachers in Southern California though Tim Miller and Marlene Gagnon were my primary Ashtanga teachers. Took a few teacher trainings as well. Now at the age of 71 my personal Sahdna consists of a custom tailored Group of asanas and Pranayamas resulting in (Sitting in a Nest of Cobras) a state where disease does not enter, as long as I keep my practice strong. My body is more fragile now yet my range of motion, balance, strength and stamina are somewhat exceptional for an old buzzard. Climbing 3 times a week and skiing the Eastern Sierra backcountry a couple times a week as well. I credit this in large part to the practice of Yoga..
